Two gone and two remain. The Persian Princess my 150/1 chance and my 75/1 poke Ana Ivanovic have both bitten the dust. However Sam Stosur, who we've backed at 25/1, held her nerve today to beat the horrible Henin. I can't tell you how pleased I am that she won this match. She nearly threw it away though. Serving at 3-4 final set she made two errors to go 0-30 and each error was greeted with that annoying "Allez" from the Belgian. SS gave her such a filthy look and proceeded to win the next six points. We didn't hear the "Allez" again thankfully as SS served out the match to win 6-4 in the final set. She's no better that 8/1 to win now but has a tall order in the quarter final against the in form Serena who holds a 3-1 HTH.
Our fourth selection Janko, who we've backed ew at 14/1, is now second favourite for the tournament at 7/2 or shorter. She meets Shvedova in the quarters and this may not be as straight forward as it looks. They've played three times before and Janko leads 2-1. But all matches went to three sets and in the big one - the US Open - the Shed won a very long match. If Janko wins she'll meet SS or Serena for a place in the final.
I am concerned about the Shed match so I'm having 3pts win Shvedova to defeat Janko at 4/1 with Extrabet (also available with Betfred).
The last four in the bottom half of the ladies' draw are now known. This is the "easy" half and you'd expect the winner to come from the top half. The first three in the outright betting, Serena, Henin and Janko are all in top half.
This opens up the possibility of backing one (or more) of the bottom four each way. Two wins and they are in the final. VC is the only firm that still offers 1/2 odds a place. (Apart from Bodog who I would not bet with).
I've therefore backed Schiavone 4pts each way at 33/1 ew with VC. I'm getting 16.5/1 her winning two matches. She's 6/4 to beat Wozniacki in her next match. The latter took nearly three hours to get past Pennetta and was supposed to be carrying an injury (no sign of it though). Plus Schiavone is 1-0 HTH against Woza.
Should she win this she'd play Petrova (improved - new coach - beat VW for first time, bit of a head case though) or Dementieva in the semi. She can't be more than 3/1 to beat one of these so that's 9/1 maximum to reach the final (in my book) and the ew bet therefore offers value. You could make a case for one of the other three - but I'm happy to stick with just this big priced selection.
If you don't have a VC account you could consider 40/1 Schiavone with Lads which pays 1/3 odds 1/2, but I prefer the VC option with the bigger place return.
Sharapova has just lost a terrific match against Henin at the French Open. She lost in three sets on her least favourite surface having had three chances to go 3-0 up in the final set. She must have a massive chance at Wimbledon. She will play the grass court warm up tournament at Edgbaston next week and I'm hoping to go and see her! I have just backed her at 10/1 8pts to win Wimbledon. This price is available as I write with Ladbrokes, Hills, Coral and VC and is strongly recommended. All her shoulder concerns seem to have been overcome and she is serving very well.
Well it all kicks off tomorrow and we have a bit of value in our four outright selections. At least our horror final of Henin v Serena can't happen as they are drawn to meet in the quarter finals. Here's the latest on our portfolio:
Sam Stosur 4 pts 25/1 Best price now 28/1 Bet365. A bad draw in the Serena/Henin quarter and will do very well to get out of there!
Anna Ivanovic 1.5pts ew 75/1 Best price now 33/1 Bet365/Betfred. Drawn in Janko's quarter and could meet her in q-final if all goes well.
Jelena Janko 3pts ew 14/1 Best price now 7/1 Lads. Top seed in second quarter and should go well.
Aravane Rezai 1pt ew 150/1 Best price now 20/1 Skybet. The most interesting of our runners and drawn to meet Venus in the last 16 who she smashed to bits in the Madrid final! If the Persian princess is not overawed by the home crowd she could go deep in this event. Let's hope she's up for it as she's third on centre court tomorrow!
One final bet before the "off". 3pts win Dulgheru at 8/1 to win the third quarter with skybet. She showed her well being by retaining her Warsaw title today. She is in a potentially weak quarter as Wozniacki and Safarova could still be carrying injuries and the holder Kuznetsova is massively out of form. 8/1 looks fair.
Aravane Rezai - have you ever seen the ball hit so hard? She's just won the first set against Jankovic in the Madrid Open as I write and I have to have a small interest in her at the 150/1 offered by Victor Chandler in what will be her home tournament. They will go mental for her!
1pt ew at 150/1 1/2 odds to reach the final.
