What a superb performance by our man to reach the final!
Backed at 50/1 each way means a 25/1 pick up for the runner-up spot as a worst case scenario. So a yield of 78pts on the bet (minus 16.5pts on the Djoko hedge) we can add 61.5pts to the Wimbledon plus column which is looking very healthy.
Berdych's progress reminds me of 1991 when Michael Stich also broke through with a semi-final finish in the French Open. I backed him at that stage at 100/1 for Wimbledon. We were lucky enough that year to draw men's final tickets in the public ballot. Thus we sat on Centre Court and watched Stich defeat Boris Becker in the final. It proved to be his only grand-slam win. I collected my 100/1 bet with a company called Coomes and they, of course, promptly closed my account.
This time I've backed Berdych with five different bookmakers so I'm hopeful the accounts will still be open should the Czech be good enough to beat Nadal on Sunday. We shouldn't back Nadal at 1/3, instead we can just enjoy the tennis and perhaps pick up an additional 153pts if the Spaniard has a rare off-day!
